Cheap East Germany Properties
Mahlitz Castle in the Schollener Land region

Is it possible to buy a German castle for less than €1 million?

Yes, with us that’s possible. Approximately 12.378 sf (1,150 m²) of living and usable space across 3 floors. However, you will need to bring your own interior furnishings. The beautiful historic interior of the castle, built in 1889, was lost after World War II and the expropriation of its noble owners.

Schloss Mahlitz Castle

Schloss Mahlitz, after gutting and facade and roof renovation, is ready for a new owner.

Any structural change made during the GDR era—which was practical at the time due to a lack of space and emergency use—has since been reversed. The castle is now completely gutted.

Roof, facade, windows, and the forecourt have all been extensively refurbished in recent years, so the building makes a solid impression from the outside.

The interior finishing is up to the new owners.

On the lower ground floor (souterrain), you’ll find 2 two-room apartments each with shower and WC. It’s possible to stay here overnight at any time of year, as the oil heating with a 10,000-liter tank (approx. 2,642 US gallons) ensures warm air and water.

Neighbors may not even notice the arrival of new residents, as the castle is surrounded by 11.42 acres (46,191 m²) of private land—some of it parkland, forest and woodland, as well as fields. There are also two garages, as these do not belong inside the structure of a historic castle.

Where is the castle located?

Exactly where you can reach within 90 minutes if you need peace and quiet from Berlin or Magdeburg: in Schollener Ländchen. Meadows, woods and hills between the Havel and the Elbe. The air and the energy here are excellent.

People are few and far between. In the village of Mahlitz, a district of Schollene located 7 km away, only 27 residents are counted.

Art, culture, a weekly market and five supermarkets are found 20 minutes to the north in Havelberg. The region’s largest employer is the Bundeswehr with its training area in Klietz, reachable in 8 minutes. Can you hear it at Schloss Mahlitz? Yes, but rarely—only on quiet days when the wind is from the south.

Otherwise, if there’s one thing you have in abundance in Mahlitz, it’s peace and quiet!

Additional video for serious prospective buyers

There is another 4K video featuring a 15-minute walk-through of the castle. You can pause the video to take a closer look at details. This could be interesting for you if you are coming from further away and want to prepare for a visit. For tours over two days, we recommend an overnight stay in Havelberg. Just ask for details.

Non-original partition walls from GDR times were professionally removed. The rooms now shine in the noble sizes originally planned, as seen here on the second floor.
